How to Answer the 14-Mark Question in Pakistan Studies Paper 1
The Pakistan Studies 14 mark question is where grades are decided. Three of them appear in a typical Paper 1 attempt, so a reliable structure is worth more than extra facts.
Quick answer: To score highly in a 14-mark question, explain the factor named in the question, explain at least two other factors, and finish with a judgement that compares them. One-sided answers are capped well below full marks; only answers with a supported judgement can reach 14.
What the Examiner Wants
- Explanation, not description: say why a factor mattered, not only what happened.
- Both sides: the given factor and alternative factors.
- Judgement: a final decision supported by a reason.
A 5-Paragraph Structure
- Paragraph 1: explain the factor in the question (point, evidence, explanation).
- Paragraphs 2–4: explain two or three other factors in the same way.
- Paragraph 5: judgement — which factor was most important and why.
Worked Plan
“Was the Partition of Bengal the main reason for the founding of the Muslim League in 1906? Explain your answer.” Plan: (1) Partition of Bengal and the Hindu reaction; (2) Congress seen as representing Hindu interests; (3) success of the Simla Deputation; (4) the Hindi–Urdu controversy; (5) judgement. Notes for the content: Partition of Bengal and Simla Deputation and Muslim League.
Timing
- Spend about 18–20 minutes on a 14-mark answer.
- Use one minute to plan the factors before you write.
- Leave two minutes for the judgement — never skip it.
Common Mistakes
- Telling the story of events without explaining their importance.
- Writing only about the factor in the question.
- A conclusion that just repeats the points.
- Long introductions that earn no marks.
Practise It
Write one 14-mark answer every two days and mark it with the mark scheme. Our guides to “how far do you agree” questions and source-based questions cover the rest of Paper 1.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many paragraphs should a 14-mark answer have?
Four or five: one on the factor in the question, two or three on other factors, and a final judgement.
Do I need a conclusion in a 14-mark question?
Yes. Full marks are only available when you give a judgement that is supported by a reason, not just a summary.
How long should I spend on a 14-mark question?
About 18 to 20 minutes, including a minute of planning.
