Agriculture is the backbone of Pakistan’s economy and a core topic in Pakistan Studies Paper 2. It employs a large share of the workforce, provides food and supplies raw materials — especially cotton — to industry.

Cropping Seasons

  • Rabi (winter crops): sown around October–December and harvested in spring. Main crops: wheat, gram and oilseeds.
  • Kharif (summer crops): sown around April–June and harvested in autumn. Main crops: rice, cotton, sugarcane and maize.

Major Crops

Wheat

Pakistan’s main food crop, grown widely across the Punjab and Sindh plains. It needs cool growing conditions, moderate water and warm, dry weather for ripening.

Rice

Needs high temperatures and plenty of water. Fine basmati rice is grown mainly in the Punjab, and other varieties in Sindh. Rice is an important export.

Cotton

A key cash crop grown in southern Punjab and Sindh. It supplies the textile industry, Pakistan’s biggest export sector. It needs a long, hot, frost-free growing season.

Sugarcane

Grown in Punjab, Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa; it needs a lot of water and supplies sugar mills.

Problems Facing Agriculture

  • Small and fragmented landholdings make modern machinery hard to use
  • Water shortage, waterlogging and salinity — see water resources of Pakistan
  • Traditional farming methods and low use of certified seeds
  • Lack of credit for small farmers, and high costs of fertiliser and fuel
  • Pests, diseases and climate hazards such as floods and heatwaves
  • Poor storage and transport, which cause post-harvest losses

Ways to Improve Agriculture

  • High-yielding and disease-resistant seed varieties
  • Efficient irrigation such as drip and sprinkler systems
  • Easy loans and training for small farmers
  • Better storage, cold chains and farm-to-market roads
  • Mechanisation where landholdings allow

Exam Tip

When asked about the conditions a crop needs, cover climate, soil, water and labour. In evaluation questions, compare solutions for small farmers against large landowners — this shows balanced thinking.

Frequently Asked Questions
