Pakistan Studies Paper 2 (Geography): Most Important Topics and How to Revise Them

Many students treat Pakistan Studies Paper 2 as the “easy” paper and leave it for the end. That’s a mistake. Paper 2 — The Environment of Pakistan — is worth as much as history, and it rewards students who revise it with structure and real examples.

The Core Topics

Paper 2 covers the geography of Pakistan. Make sure you have complete notes on each of these:

• Land and topography: northern mountains, western highlands, the Potwar Plateau, the Indus plain and deserts
• Climate: seasons, monsoon and western depressions, and climate-related hazards such as floods and droughts
• Water resources: the Indus River system, dams and barrages, irrigation methods and water shortage
• Forestry: types of forest, their uses, and the causes and effects of deforestation
• Agriculture: major crops, livestock, farming problems and ways to increase production
• Fishing: marine and inland fishing and their development
• Minerals and power resources: coal, oil, gas, hydroelectric, nuclear, solar and wind power, and the energy crisis
• Industry: large-scale, small-scale and cottage industries, and factors affecting industrial location
• Transport, communication and trade: roads, railways, ports, air travel, imports and exports
• Population and employment: growth, distribution, migration, urbanisation and literacy

Revise With the Cause–Effect–Solution Method

Almost every longer Paper 2 question asks you to explain problems or evaluate solutions. For each topic, make a three-column table:

1. Causes — why the problem exists
2. Effects — on people, the economy and the environment
3. Solutions — what has been done and what else could be done, with their advantages and disadvantages

Use Named Pakistani Examples

Generic answers score low. Name specific dams, rivers, cities, crops, industrial areas and ports in your answers. An answer that says “large dams store water” is weaker than one that names a dam and explains its role in irrigation and power generation.

Don’t Ignore Maps, Graphs and Figures

Paper 2 regularly uses maps, graphs, tables and photographs. Practise reading data carefully, quoting figures from the resource and describing trends accurately. Easy marks are often lost here through careless reading.

Evaluation Questions in Geography
